Mammoth Cave Day Trip

Matt and I decided that while we are in TN we need to make sure that we take advantage of being so close to some things that we would probably never see. So we invited some friends from Matt's work to go to Bowling Green, KY for a day trip. We went to Mammoth Cave National Park. It is the world's largest cave. :) I was kind of nervous because the tour guide gave the speech of dangers and stuff before we went down and commented that there were areas that you had to turn sideways to get through and the 150 steps of the Fireman's stairs to navigate. But we charged on! :)
At first the plan was for Matt to carry Will in the chest carrier thing, but Will was being grumpy and wanted me to hold him. Will did really good, there were a couple of times he got fussy, but it was just because he wanted to keep moving. LOL There was so much to see.
There were a couple of spots that were pretty low so I was glad to have the carrier to help me with Will so I could bend over and still have him be secure. During the fat man's misery I was a little nervous because I had to squeeze through sideways and try not to hit Will's head or scratch his legs on the rocks. The fat man's misery was about 5.5 ft tall, some places shorter and about 2 ft wide, sometimes skinnier. Luckily the narrow parts only went up to my waist or so so it wasn't too terrible. There was one spot where our friends 19 year old son did the limbo to get through because it was so low. LOL He was about Matt's height or maybe a little taller.
Here are some pics!

The walk down to the cave entrance
 Pretty scenery
 The entrance...

The camera kept showing the dust particles.
These were containers used in the 1800s
The back of Rufus' head. :)
 This is the giants coffin
Will was having a hard time with the flash because it was so dark down there.
 Mind your head...
 Fat Man's misery...
The back of Annette, Rufus, and Spencer...
 Isn't Matt's bad loverly!
James and I had to stop to look at the rocks
105 feet down to the bottom, which you can see as you are walking across the bridge... I was just glad it wasn't a bridge from Indiana Jones. :)

Just wanted to show how low it was, Matt had to crouch a bit

Spencer going through Fat Man's misery
More Fat Man's misery... hold on Will!
Me, James, and Annette in the back crawling through the hole
Fireman's Stairs... 150 steps to get almost out of the cave. :)

Almost out... Will was happy to get out of the carrier

And we are done, almost...
After we got out of the cave, we then had to trek up the hill to get to the top. I think that was worse than the fireman's stairs, mainly because it was suddenly very humid (the cave was a nice chilly temperature) and we didn't have a leisurely pace with some stops. LOL
After the 2 mile cave trip we decided to head into Bowling Green and get some yummy Mexican food from Chuy's. It was pretty yummy! Luckily Will crashed for the 1.5 hour drive home.
Next trip we hope to go to Louisville, KY and go to Church Hill Downs and lots of other stuff.

  1. So fun! I love that you're taking Will with you out on your adventures! We've taken our kids places that no one else would ever dream of but they love it and will have great memories. I used to love going in caves, but looking at some of those pictures makes me think maybe I'm getting too old for that... :)
